This is also a great opportunity to learn a little more about Heather's background and career path:
'My passion is teaching the under 5’s and I have had a career in Early Years for over 21 years. My background, however, could not be more different. I
grew up in London where I completed a degree in Fashion and Knitwear. I have had an eclectic working life – working on photoshoots for record companies, modelling on catwalks and working within the
special effects industry. When my eldest was born I had a complete career change and became a childminder. I realised that teaching the under 5’s and helping them learn and develop was my calling. I
opened my first nursery in 2012 and moved to our current location in 2014.
My interests include lots of geeky stuff especially Star Wars, Sci-Fi and Marvel comics, sports – rugby and keeping fit, dancing –for enjoyment and
performing in shows and listening to live Music and local bands.
Now I am developing training for Beech Tree Childcare for other settings and am an advocate in raising the public perception of the importance of the
early years and the impact of high-quality early years teaching on life chances. I am working with local secondary schools and colleges to promote the apprenticeship scheme and the recruitment of men
within the early year’s workforce. I am also involved in university research projects in England and the USA on poverty in the early years and the impact of COVID19.
At Beech Tree Childcare we have strong links with the University of Brighton, and I have mentored and supported 2 of our team to progress to study full
time degrees in Education and 2 of our team to begin their part time degrees in Children and Young People this September.
I am so glad I decided to change my career over 21 years ago and am looking forward to starting my PGCE ages 3-7 primary school teaching training in
September with the University of Brighton. '
