Pride Month 2021: At Beech Tree Childcare we actively support Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity. Although it may be too early to discuss many aspects of relationships with the children, it is never too early to embrace the fact that not all families are what has been historically seen as the 'nuclear family'.
We plan over the next couple of weeks to include several activities around Pride 2021, very much with the modern family in mind.
We would love you as parents and carers to get involved by bringing in pictures of your families so we can talk about the different groups the children will come across through life (any countries/birthplaces etc would really help so we can add the pictures to our 'One World, One People' map in the nursery).
We are growing our library to also assist in helping the children understand diversity (see image of booklist)
As a setting we are training in various areas to become better with major focuses being put into:
• Inclusive Language
• Stopping Mean Words and Actions
• Diverse Books and Images
• Nursery and Classroom Climate – Setting a Positive, Inclusive Tone for All
We look forward to celebrating Pride with you over the next coming weeks and actively encourage some bright colours and dress up..which will open up so many learning experiences for the children.
Update: Thanks to a fantastic response from all the parents and carers, we have now printed and laminated the pictures, and they are being actively used in play, and on display in our family room. If you attended the coffee morning you will have seen them hung up (or blowing around as the pegs are too small ;)).
We have also put together a video with the images that can be seen below.
All in all, a really good activity that will help children understand how we are all alike no matter what our backgrounds and yet we can all be individual and accepted.
